Police rescue medical doctor from kidnappers, arrest PoS operator for receiving ransom
The Abia State Police Command announced the successful rescue of a medical doctor who had been kidnapped, as well as the arrest of a Point of Sale (PoS) operator suspected of receiving ransom money from the victim’s family.
Police Commissioner Wilfred Afolabi made the announcement Friday in Umuahia during a press briefing, highlighting the command’s achievements less than a month after he took office.
Dr. Ikenna Ilo was abducted on August 19, 2026, and was found unharmed following an operation based on actionable intelligence. Afolabi noted that police operatives were deployed immediately upon receiving information about the case and traced the suspect vehicle towards Imo State, coordinating efforts with the Imo State Police Command to facilitate the rescue.
In addition to the PoS operator, four suspects have been apprehended. Afolabi indicated that three of the suspects were involved in dismantling the vehicle’s tracking device, while the PoS operator was implicated in receiving the ransom. An investigation is ongoing, with efforts to identify and apprehend additional members of the criminal network.
Afolabi further reported that since his appointment, the police have made significant progress in reducing crime in the region, with multiple arrests made concerning firearm offenses, defilement, vandalism, and other criminal activities.
