Rivers State Police Arrest Officers Accused of Extortion
The Rivers State Police Command has detained several officers accused of extorting motorists, following the circulation of a viral video on social media.
The incident, which took place in Rivers State, came to light on June 23, 2026. Officers attached to the Old GRA Police Station reportedly targeted drivers, particularly those with tinted windows, demanding payments despite these motorists possessing valid permits.
In a statement released by Police Public Relations Officer ASP Agabe Kaborlo on behalf of Rivers State Commissioner of Police Olugbenga Adepoju, the command confirmed the arrests of ASP Omomefe Akin Geoffrey and other implicated officers, who are now under investigation.
Commissioner Adepoju emphasized that the arrests and subsequent investigations were initiated in response to the extortion allegations. “Extortion, illegal collection of money, and any form of unprofessional conduct by police personnel will not be tolerated under any circumstances,” he stated.
He assured the public that the investigation would be “thorough, transparent, and impartial,” and warned that any officer found guilty would face disciplinary action in accordance with the Nigeria Police Act.
The police command also encouraged citizens to report instances of misconduct, corruption, or abuse of office through official complaint channels, reaffirming its commitment to professionalism, integrity, and accountability.
