Ekiti State Court Sentences Two to Death for Kidnapping NYSC Member

An Ekiti State High Court has sentenced two men to death by hanging after they were found guilty of kidnapping Omoboade Adesina, a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

Ibrahim Abubakar and Abdullahi Abubakar were convicted following their arrest by operatives from the Department of State Services (DSS) in connection with the abduction that took place on April 22, 2022.

Delivering the judgment, Chief Judge of Ekiti State Justice Lekan Ogunmoye stated that the prosecution successfully proved its case against the two defendants beyond a reasonable doubt. He subsequently imposed the death sentence on both Ibrahim and Abdullahi Abubakar.

Justice Ogunmoye commended the DSS prosecution team for their thorough investigation and effective presentation of the case. He highlighted the significance of the identification parade and the analysis of call data records as important evidence that contributed to the court’s decision.

“The prosecution successfully established the guilt of the first and second defendants beyond reasonable doubt,” the judge said.

In contrast, the court discharged and acquitted a third defendant, Usman Abubakar, determining that the prosecution had not proven his involvement in the crime.

This ruling marks yet another successful prosecution by the DSS in cases of kidnapping and related offenses throughout Nigeria. Recently, the agency secured convictions in separate incidents involving terrorism and cross-border arms trafficking in Sokoto and Kogi states.
