FCC warns MDAs of tougher penalties as NPA backs reforms

FCC Warns MDAs of Stricter Penalties for Violating Federal Character Act

The Federal Character Commission (FCC) has issued a warning to Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) regarding increased penalties for violations of the Federal Character Act. This announcement parallels the Nigerian Ports Authority’s (NPA) commitment to support the FCC’s ongoing reforms.

The warning was conveyed during a recent meeting between the NPA’s management and the FCC Committee on Works, Transport, and Aviation at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

Hon. Peter Eze, chairman of the committee, informed attendees about the FCC’s new compliance framework, revised operational guidelines, and the sanctions that would be imposed on MDAs failing to adhere to Federal Character principles.

“The purpose of this engagement is to evaluate the NPA’s compliance and to strengthen collaboration in promoting fairness, equity, and inclusivity in public service,” Eze stated. He added that the FCC has implemented stricter monitoring mechanisms and penalties to ensure adherence across government institutions.

Eze noted that NPA representatives were briefed on the Commission’s reforms under Executive Chairman Hon. Hulayat Motunrayo Omidiran. “They have been informed of new rules, penalties for violations, and the measures we will take against any MDA that deviates from our mandate,” he said.

In response, Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, Managing Director and CEO of the NPA, reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to complying with Federal Character principles. He described the meeting as productive, emphasizing that collaboration among government institutions is crucial for effective service delivery and national development.

“Everyone must recognize that meaningful progress requires collaboration and adherence to established rules, regulations, and policies,” Dantsoho remarked. He also commended the FCC leadership for its ongoing reforms aimed at enhancing transparency and accountability.

Eze expressed gratitude for the NPA’s willingness to collaborate with the FCC and voiced optimism regarding alignment with the Commission’s mandate. He underscored that closer cooperation between the two entities could promote good governance, equity, and national unity.
