World Cup: I don’t have substitutes in my squad – Portugal coach, Martinez

Portugal Coach Confident Ahead of Final Group Match at 2026 Tournament

Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez expressed confidence in his squad’s readiness as they prepare for their final group match against Colombia at the 2026 tournament. Martinez stated that all 26 players possess the necessary skill and fitness to contribute effectively.

Known for their depth of talent, Portugal is viewed as one of the frontrunners for the championship. They began their tournament campaign with a surprising 1-1 draw against the Democratic Republic of Congo but rebounded impressively with a 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan. Star forward Cristiano Ronaldo, the team’s captain, played a pivotal role in that match, scoring two goals.

During a press conference ahead of the match against Colombia, scheduled for June 28, Martinez emphasized the importance of readiness throughout the squad.

“Our goal is to ensure that everyone is prepared,” he remarked. “We have reached a point where we can make three substitutions at halftime while maintaining our tactical and technical quality. Those on the bench are also ready to make an impact. The term substitute does not exist in our team.”

A win against Colombia would secure Portugal’s position at the top of Group K. Martinez is particularly hopeful for another strong showing from Ronaldo, who has made history as the only player to score in six different editions of the tournament.
