Abia Govt urges compliance as taskforce begins Okada ban enforcement
Abia State Enforces Ban on Commercial Motorcycles
UMUAHIA, Abia State — The Abia State Government has called on residents to cooperate with enforcement agencies as they implement a ban on commercial motorcycle operations in designated areas of Umuahia, Aba, and Ohafia.
Okey Kanu, the State Commissioner for Information, made the announcement in a statement issued on Sunday. He noted that the ban aims to enhance security and safeguard the lives and property of all citizens.
While acknowledging that many residents rely on commercial motorcycle operations for their livelihoods, the government emphasized that the decision aligns with the broader interests of public safety. Authorities have pledged to conduct enforcement in a fair and professional manner.
The penalties for noncompliance have been adjusted. Defaulters will now face a fine of N20,000, reduced from the previously announced N50,000.
Under the new policy, all private and commercial motorcycles, as well as tricycles, must be registered and documented. Additionally, private motorcycle operators are prohibited from carrying passengers.
Motorcycles impounded by law enforcement will be returned to their owners following the completion of registration, verification, documentation, and compliance with other statutory requirements.
The Abia State Government has encouraged citizens to report any misconduct, including extortion or abuse by Task Force officials, through designated phone lines provided by the State.
