Akara business: ‘We’re not intimidated’ – Remi Tinubu breaks silence
First Lady of Nigeria Addresses Backlash Over Business Advice
JIGAWA, Nigeria — Remi Tinubu, the First Lady of Nigeria, has responded to criticism following her advice to unemployed women in the country to engage in frying bean cakes, known locally as akara, as a means of economic survival.
The remarks, shared in a viral video, sparked outrage among many Nigerian youths, who accused the First Lady of being insensitive to the challenges faced by citizens.
Speaking on Monday in Jigawa State, Tinubu noted that her office is not deterred by the public outcry. She emphasized that the advice was well-received by its intended audience and highlighted the ongoing support provided to various small-scale traders, including those selling tomatoes, maize, and vegetables.
“I heard people talking about akara sellers. It is not only akara sellers. We are also supporting tomato sellers, maize sellers, vegetable sellers, and many other petty traders,” she stated.
Tinubu expressed confidence in the appreciation of her initiatives among beneficiaries, asserting that her office would continue to prioritize the welfare of the community despite negative reports.
