NSCDC arrests suspected cable vandals in Lagos
NSCDC Arrests Multiple Suspects in Lagos for Cable Vandalism and Theft
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Lagos State Command, has apprehended several individuals suspected of cable vandalism and other criminal activities during various operations across the state.
The suspects were presented to the media on Monday at the NSCDC headquarters on Awolowo Road in Alausa, Ikeja.
According to NSCDC officials, the arrests were the result of intelligence-driven operations and ongoing collaboration with local communities and private security organizations.
Public Relations Officer SC Oluwaseun Abolurin reported that two suspects were arrested on Saturday in the Okun Ajah area after allegedly vandalizing armored cables valued at millions of naira. The arrests followed information provided by community residents.
Abolurin noted that Proton Security Limited played a vital role by alerting the NSCDC, which allowed operatives to respond quickly to the scene. Two additional suspects believed to be involved in the same vandalism incident managed to escape and are currently being pursued by security officials.
“The two suspects who are at large can only run, but they cannot hide forever,” Abolurin stated.
He emphasized that community collaboration remains critical in tackling infrastructure vandalism and related crimes, highlighting efforts to strengthen partnerships with traditional leaders, youth organizations, market associations, and private security firms.
In a separate case, another suspect was arrested on Friday for allegedly vandalizing transformer cables in the Shogunle area of Oshodi. Investigations into this incident are ongoing.
Additionally, NSCDC operatives apprehended suspects involved in the theft of eight lithium batteries from Orchid Road in Lekki on June 15. The arrests occurred around 4 p.m. as part of an ongoing investigation into the theft.
“We will ensure due diligence for prosecution and possible conviction through the court,” Abolurin said, mentioning that several previous cases of cable vandalism are already in the judicial process, including that of a 44-year-old suspect currently facing charges.
Abolurin also revealed that the NSCDC arrested two deserters from the Togolese Army, who will be transferred to the relevant authorities for further investigation.
He urged residents to continue supporting security agencies with credible intelligence, reiterating the importance of public cooperation in safeguarding critical national infrastructure.
Abolurin confirmed the NSCDC’s ongoing commitment to combating vandalism, infrastructure theft, and other forms of economic sabotage throughout Lagos State.
