UNIOSUN assault: NAWOJ demands dismissal, prosecution of Nigerian Army personnel

Osun State Women Journalists Call for Accountability Following Allegations Against Army Recruits

The Osun State chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has demanded the immediate dismissal and prosecution of Nigerian Army recruits implicated in the alleged rape of female students at Osun State University in Osogbo.

In a statement issued by Chairperson Comrade Abisola Ariwodola and Secretary Oluwaranti Ojewumi, the association condemned the incident, labeling it a severe case of sexual and gender-based violence. NAWOJ urged Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu to ensure that any recruits found guilty are dismissed from service in accordance with military regulations.

Additionally, the organization called for the suspects to be turned over to civil authorities for investigation and prosecution in line with the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law and other relevant statutes.

The association emphasized the need for the university, security agencies, and government ministries to provide medical, psychosocial, and legal support for the alleged survivors, ensuring their safety and protection from harassment.

Describing the situation as a barbaric abuse of power, NAWOJ stated that security personnel must adhere to the highest standards of accountability. They expressed concern regarding the actions of recruits, stating, “It is disheartening to note that men in uniform who ought to protect us are those perpetrating this act. Such individuals are dangerous to society and the state.”

In their statement, NAWOJ emphasized that no uniform protects a rapist from justice, urging the military to adopt a zero-tolerance approach to such misconduct. They warned that inaction would erode public trust and embolden future offenders.

The association commended Vice-Chancellor Professor Odunayo Clement Adebooye and the university administration for their efforts to support the affected students and for coordinating with relevant agencies.

NAWOJ reiterated its commitment to advocating for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence and collaborating with security agencies, the Ministry of Women Affairs, and civil society organizations to promote accountability and justice.

Earlier reports indicated that Osun State University had formally lodged a complaint regarding an incident in which soldiers allegedly invaded student housing, assaulted residents, and stole more than 60 mobile phones and other electronic devices.
