Pope Leo Appoints Two Nigerians to Vatican’s Dicastery for Evangelization

Pope Leo has appointed two Nigerian clerics to significant roles within the Vatican’s Dicastery for Evangelization, further expanding African representation in this influential body.

The appointments were reported by Fides News Agency and coincide with the selection of three additional African leaders within the Catholic Church.

Archbishop Alfred Adewale Martins of Lagos will serve as a member of the Dicastery’s Section for First Evangelization and New Particular Churches. This division is critical to the Vatican’s mission, overseeing missionary activities and the establishment of new local Churches.

Additionally, Father Wenceslaus C. Madu, C.M.F., currently the Vice-Chancellor of Claretian University of Nigeria in Nekede, has been appointed as a consultor for the same Dicastery.

Other notable appointments include Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo Besungu, OFM Cap, the Archbishop of Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Archbishop Andrew Nkea Fuanya of Bamenda, Cameroon, both selected as members of the Dicastery. Archbishop François Sylla of Conakry, Guinea, has also been appointed as a consultor.

These recent appointments reflect a strategic effort to enhance African influence within the Vatican’s evangelization mission and the governance of emerging local Churches.
