Security tightened around Niger Presidential Palace amid reported military unrest
Niger Increases Security Near Presidential Palace Amid Armed Forces Unrest
NIAMEY, Niger — Following reports of unrest among some members of the armed forces, security has been heightened around Niger’s Presidential Palace, sources indicated.
The Presidential Guard, supported by armored vehicles, intensified its presence around the palace during the night of July 3 and into July 4, in response to what has been described as a limited protest by personnel from an armored unit of the Niger Armed Forces (FAN), according to security reporter Zagazola Makama on X.
Sources reported that certain soldiers refused orders to deploy to frontline positions in the Tillabéri Region, particularly in the areas around Inatès and Chinagodrar. These soldiers reportedly expressed concerns about insufficient heavy equipment and operational resources needed to address escalating security threats in the region.
One security source referred to the situation as a “small mutiny,” though there has been no official confirmation from Nigerien authorities regarding this characterization.
The protest has prompted the government to enhance security measures near the Presidential Palace and implement temporary movement restrictions in the surrounding areas as a precaution.
The Tillabéri Region is recognized as one of Niger’s most perilous locations, having experienced numerous attacks by armed extremist groups, including factions linked to the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS).
As of now, neither the Nigerien government nor the military has released an official statement regarding the reported protest or the increased security measures at the Presidential Palace.
