Police storm cult meeting in Umuahia, apprehend suspects

Abia State Police Arrest Three Suspected Gang Members
Umuahia, Abia State — The Abia State Police Command announced the arrest of three individuals linked to a suspected criminal gang during an operation in Ubakala, Umuahia South Local Government Area on July 6, 2027.
According to a statement from Police Public Relations Officer Maureen Chinaka, the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) was deployed after receiving actionable intelligence about a gathering of roughly 50 individuals allegedly engaged in cult activities.
Police apprehended the suspects — identified as Obioma Nmeribe, Emmanuel Lekwechi, and Ikemefula ThankGod Amadi — during the operation.
The authorities recovered several items from the suspects, including a Beretta pistol with eight rounds of ammunition, a locally made pistol, two live cartridges, one live ammunition, two black berets, a cutlass, and a digging tool.
In a related incident on the same day, police and members of a joint security team known as Operation Crush arrested Bright Nnabugu, a 31-year-old resident of Umuobasi in Ugwunagbo Local Government Area. During the arrest, officers recovered a locally made single-barrel long gun, an expended cartridge, and a cutter with high-tension wire.
Investigations are currently underway for both cases, and the police indicated that the suspects will be charged in court upon completion of these investigations.
Commissioner of Police Danladi Isa urged residents to report any security concerns to local police stations or utilize the Command’s emergency hotlines.
