Release El-Rufai’s doctor immediately – MURIC tells ICPC

Muslim Rights Concern Calls for Release of Kaduna Physician

Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) is urging the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to release Professor Bello Abubakar, who served as the personal physician to former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai.

In a statement issued Friday, MURIC Executive Director Professor Ishaq Akintola described the ICPC’s recent arrest of Abubakar as unjust. The physician was taken into custody on Wednesday in connection with alleged false statements.

MURIC condemned the arrest in strong terms, asserting that it undermines global standards and democratic principles. Akintola emphasized the importance of respecting medical professionals, stating that their integrity is crucial to patient confidentiality. He expressed concern that the circumstances of Abubakar’s detention may pressure him into compromising his professional ethics.

“The arrest stands in direct opposition to the principles of democracy and good practice. We demand the unconditional release of the doctor without delay,” Akintola said. He highlighted the potential risks associated with detention, particularly the possibility that Abubakar could be coerced into disclosing confidential patient information.

MURIC continues to advocate for the rights and protection of medical personnel in Nigeria.
