Niger Police drag motorists to court as 82 vehicles fall in tinted glass, number plate crackdown

Niger State Police Intercepts 82 Vehicles in Enforcement Operation

The Niger State Police Command has taken action against various motorists, prosecuting several individuals as part of a statewide enforcement initiative targeting unregistered vehicles, defaced number plates, and illegal tinted glass. This operation began on June 20, 2026, following directives from the Inspector-General of Police aimed at enhancing security and reducing crimes associated with vehicles that conceal their identities.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Police Public Relations Officer SP Wasiu Abiodun outlined the focus of the operation, which targets vehicles lacking registration, those with obscured or defaced plates, and vehicles equipped with illegal tinted glass. Several motorists were released after screening, while those found in violation of the law were investigated and subsequently arraigned in courts.

Authorities have noted a concerning trend: criminals frequently utilize unregistered vehicles and concealed number plates to evade law enforcement during criminal activities, including kidnappings and robberies. Thus, the current enforcement is viewed as crucial for public safety.

Commissioner of Police CP Adamu Abdullahi Elleman emphasized that the operation is not intended to intimidate law-abiding citizens but to bolster intelligence gathering, improve vehicle identification, and enhance the overall security framework in the state. He urged vehicle owners to ensure their cars are registered properly and display visible number plates at all times, warning that the enforcement effort will continue throughout the state.

The police also encouraged the public to report any complaints or observations via the Command’s emergency lines for prompt response and assistance.
