‘Exceptional individuals like Soyinka do not come often in generation’ – Tinubu

Tinubu Honors Soyinka on 92nd Birthday
President Bola Tinubu paid tribute to Nobel laureate Professor Wole Soyinka in a statement released Sunday, celebrating the playwright and activist on the eve of his 92nd birthday. Tinubu described Soyinka as an extraordinary figure whose work in literature and advocacy for democracy and good governance has made a significant impact both in Nigeria and globally.
In his message, Tinubu emphasized the rarity of individuals like Soyinka. “Exceptional individuals like Professor Soyinka do not come often in a generation,” he stated. “He illuminates the path for humanity, challenges convention, and refuses to remain silent in the face of oppression and injustice.”
Tinubu congratulated Soyinka for his achievements as a playwright, novelist, poet, and essayist. The President noted that Soyinka was the first African to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1986 and has since received numerous esteemed international awards in recognition of his contributions to literature and society.
The President also recalled Soyinka’s involvement in Nigeria’s struggle against military rule, particularly his support for the June 12 democratic movement. “I also recall Professor Soyinka’s courageous struggle against military dictatorship over the years, and his efforts during the June 12 struggle, for which we were both in the trenches,” Tinubu said.
Describing Soyinka as one of Nigeria’s greatest national assets, Tinubu praised his wisdom and ongoing commitment to the country’s progress, which continues to inspire many.
“Today, I salute one of our nation’s living repositories of history, knowledge, and courage,” he remarked. “That he is with us is a gift we will always treasure. I thank him for his unwavering faith in the Nigerian project and his wise counsel.”
In closing, Tinubu acknowledged Soyinka’s enduring influence on generations of writers, scholars, and activists around the world. “As he marks this birthday, I join the world in celebrating his profound impact on generations and his sacrifices for our nation,” he stated. “I wish ‘Kongi’ many more years in excellent health.”
