Anambra State to Repay Loans from Previous Administrations
The Anambra State Government announced it is in the process of repaying loans taken out by previous administrations, notably those under former governors Peter Obi and Willie Obiano.
Izuchukwu Okafor, the state’s Commissioner for Finance, shared this information during a recent episode of the Ndi Anambra podcast, produced by the state government’s New Media team.
Okafor emphasized that the financial obligations inherited from past administrations remain part of the current administration’s responsibilities. He noted that the government under Governor Chukwuma Soludo has refrained from accruing new commercial bank loans since taking office.
“We have focused primarily on servicing our existing obligations rather than incurring new debts,” Okafor stated. He underscored that the current administration has not borrowed funds from any commercial bank to date.
Despite the lack of new borrowing, Okafor clarified that the government continues to meet its debt obligations. He explained that deductions from the state’s earnings allocated by the Federation Account Allocation Committee are still being made to service loans contracted by prior administrations.
Specifically, Okafor attributed a portion of these outstanding debts to the tenures of Obi and Obiano. “These loans were borrowed during the time of Peter Obi and Willie Obiano, the past governors,” he added.
