Bauchi Police Arrest Suspect in Community Leader’s Killing
Bauchi, Nigeria — The Bauchi State Police Command has apprehended 40-year-old Clement Anthony in connection with the fatal shooting of community leader Jacob Bature. Authorities recovered a locally made single-barrel gun along with an expended cartridge linked to the attack.
The incident occurred on the evening of July 19, around 7:00 p.m., when Anthony allegedly opened fire on Bature, the 55-year-old Mai Anguwa of Unguwar Ngas in Bauchi’s Inkil area. Witnesses reported that Bature sustained severe gunshot wounds to his right ribs and collapsed at the scene.
The event was reported to the ‘A’ Division Township Police Station around 8:30 p.m., prompting a swift police response. Bature was transported to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. His body has been placed in the hospital’s morgue pending an autopsy.
The case has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further inquiry. Authorities plan to present charges against Anthony following the completion of the investigation.
Bauchi State Commissioner of Police Sani-Omolori Aliyu condemned the murder and assured the community that the police will pursue justice. He emphasized the command’s dedication to addressing violent crimes and cautioned the public against illegal firearm possession. Aliyu also encouraged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station.
