Peter Obi Expresses Condolences Following Building Collapses in Anambra and Ogun States
Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has expressed deep sorrow over the recent collapse of structures housing students at the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, located in Amaokpala, Anambra State, and another incident in Ajuwon, Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State. In a post on his verified X account on Wednesday, Obi referred to the tragic loss of two lives in these incidents as deeply distressing.
The former governor of Anambra State emphasized the necessity of prioritizing public safety, noting that such events serve as a painful reminder of ongoing challenges. He commended the Anambra and Ogun State governments, along with Dr. Chioma Irene Awuzie, the rector of Federal Polytechnic, Oko, as well as emergency responders and security agencies, for their swift and coordinated efforts in rescue and relief operations.
Obi remarked that their prompt actions helped mitigate a potentially larger tragedy and called for greater reflection and immediate action to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
He stated, “Across our country, we must strengthen the enforcement of building regulations, ensure strict compliance with approved standards, and insist on regular structural integrity assessments to avoid preventable tragedies.”
Obi underscored the importance of safety and welfare, particularly for the youth, as central to national development. He called for continued investment not just in educational infrastructure but in creating safe and suitable environments for all citizens.
In closing, he extended his thoughts and prayers to the families of the deceased and the injured, as well as students affected by the incidents. “I will continue to cherish and support our students, as they remain central to building the New Nigeria we aspire to,” he added. “By investing in their education, safety, and well-being, we make that New Nigeria possible.”
