Nigeria Police Bar Unauthorised Security Groups from Election Operations
OSOGBO, Nigeria — The Nigeria Police Force has prohibited the Western Nigeria Security Network, known as Amotekun, along with vigilante groups and other unauthorised security outfits from participating in security operations for the upcoming Osun State governorship election set for 2026.
The directive was issued by the Assistant Inspector General of Police for Zone XI in a statement released to the media on Wednesday, facilitated by the zone’s Public Relations Officer, SP Ojedele Olanrewaju.
According to the police, only constitutionally recognised security agencies will be permitted to oversee security matters before, during, and after the election. The statement clarifies that the police, in conjunction with these agencies, will maintain law and order throughout the election period.
“As part of efforts to ensure a secure electoral environment, the Nigeria Police Force will be solely responsible for security provision,” the statement indicated.
In addition, the police emphasized that all personnel assigned to election duties must carry proper identification and wear their official uniforms.
The Assistant Inspector General confirmed that Amotekun, vigilante groups, neighbourhood watch organizations, political groups, and other quasi-security outfits will not have roles in election security operations.
“Only constitutionally recognised security agencies are authorized to engage in election security operations,” he stated. The police noted that any unauthorized individuals or groups attempting to perform security functions, control crowds, or interfere with the electoral process would face legal repercussions.
The command also urged political parties, candidates, and their supporters to exhibit peaceful conduct and comply with the law throughout the election period.
Residents of Osun State are encouraged to report any suspicious activities, incidents of violence, voter intimidation, or other disruptions to the nearest police station or designated security agency.
The Nigeria Police Force’s Zone XI Headquarters reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property, ensuring the integrity of the electoral process, and creating a secure atmosphere for eligible voters to exercise their rights without fear of intimidation.
