Suspected cultists kill security guard in Lagos

Police Investigate Murder of Security Guard in Lagos

LAGOS, Nigeria — A security guard identified only as Godwin was killed Saturday evening in the Abule Ijesha area of Yaba, allegedly by suspected cult members, prompting panic among local residents.

According to a police source who requested anonymity, the attackers arrived in a vehicle and confronted Godwin near his workplace. They reportedly shot him in the head before assaulting him with an axe.

The source indicated that the assailants fired several shots into the air as they fled, creating a sense of alarm among bystanders and residents.

“The report we received indicated that gunmen suspected to be cultists shot a security guard not far from his duty post,” the source stated. Eyewitnesses corroborated that he was attacked with an axe following the shooting.

Separately, an anti-cultism organization called Naija Confra reported that three additional individuals sustained gunshot wounds during the incident. The platform stated that witnesses described the assailants driving a white Mercedes-Benz and firing indiscriminately, leaving three young girls injured.

As of now, the Lagos State Police Command has not confirmed the reported injuries or any additional casualties linked to the attack. An investigation into the murder is ongoing, and police are working to identify and apprehend those responsible.

Attempts to reach the police command’s spokesperson, CSP Abimbola Adebisi, for further comments were unsuccessful, as phone calls went unanswered and texts were not returned by the time of this report.
