Joint Task Force Intensifies Crackdown on Illegal Mining in Taraba State
The Joint Task Force on Anti-Mining Operations in Taraba State has ramped up efforts to combat illegal mining in the Kusum, Badakoshi, and Mayo Kam areas of Bali Local Government Area. Under the command of Major A.M. Ghali, the operation was conducted in the early hours of Sunday, targeting illegal mining sites in Daban Kusum, Daban Faransa, and Daban Yarima.
According to Auwal Mohammed, Special Adviser to the Taraba State Government on Mining, the task force successfully dislodged illegal miners in the targeted areas, resulting in the seizure of eight mining machines. The operation also led to the arrest of eight suspects, who are now in custody pending further investigation and potential prosecution.
In a separate operation, the task force intercepted five vehicles allegedly transporting mining equipment toward Mayo Kam and Daka. The vehicles were reportedly carrying mining machines, a large monazite separator, water-pumping generators, and various other equipment used in mining activities. Over 50 mining machines were reported confiscated during the operation; however, logistical challenges posed by the difficult terrain limited the task force’s ability to evacuate all seized machines, with only eight being removed from the site. Vigilantes and local hunters have been assigned to secure the remaining equipment until it can be evacuated.
Commander Ghali acknowledged the challenges of the operation, noting that personnel often relied on motorcycles and traversed long distances to access remote mining locations. He commended the support from Governor Agbu Kefas and local residents, stating that it has been crucial in the ongoing efforts to dismantle illegal mining activities and protect the state’s mineral resources.
The task force remains committed to continuing its operations across the affected areas, with a focus on eradicating illegal mining.
