Nnamdi Kanu: At last, IPOB cancels sit-at-home in South-East

Biafra Group Cancels Monday Sit-at-Home Order
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) announced on Sunday the permanent cancellation of its Monday sit-at-home directive for Nigeria’s South-East region, effective February 9, 2026.
Emma Powerful, spokesperson for IPOB, stated that the decision was made by Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the organization’s leader. “The Monday sit-at-home across the South-East is officially and permanently cancelled with effect from tomorrow,” the statement read.
IPOB emphasized that Kanu’s decision aims to restore normalcy in the South-East, allowing residents to resume their daily activities without fear. The group urged markets, schools, businesses, and transportation services to operate normally starting on Monday.
Kanu’s directive was described as “clear and unequivocal.” The group warned that any attempt to enforce a sit-at-home order in the future would be considered an act against Kanu’s command, labeling such individuals as “enemies of our people.”
In response to potential enforcement of a sit-at-home, IPOB cautioned that they would confront those attempting to instill fear or intimidation. The organization also urged residents to remain vigilant and law-abiding.
Further, IPOB warned state governments against punitive measures against traders who might choose to stay home, asserting that no governor has the authority to threaten or close businesses based on such actions.
In recent developments, a separate IPOB group led by Igwe Butuzo and General De Yahoo released a video announcing the cancellation of the Monday sit-at-home order. This statement coincided with Kanu’s ongoing calls to discontinue the civil disobedience practice.
Aloy Ejimakor, Kanu’s legal advisor, confirmed that Kanu had previously advocated for the cancellation of the sit-at-home order since July 2024, asserting that this position has remained unchanged. He stated that previous attempts to enforce the sit-at-home order had met with resistance.
As the group encourages citizens to resume normal activities, it declared the era of the Monday sit-at-home over.
