Former FC Porto defender Ricardo Costa has expressed support for Cristiano Ronaldo’s position in the Portugal national team. In remarks made to Portuguese publication O Jogo, Costa highlighted Ronaldo’s continued ability to compete at the highest level, particularly during the 2026 World Cup.
Costa pointed out that while Ronaldo remains a key figure, rivals such as Lionel Messi have also faced criticism for their performances. He referenced Messi’s underwhelming display in the World Cup final, where Argentina fell to Spain, 1-0.
“I think we should acknowledge Cristiano Ronaldo’s merit for continuing to compete at the highest level,” Costa said, emphasizing the need to recognize the accomplishments of experienced players.
He also addressed the decisions made by the national team coach, asserting that if Portugal had advanced to the tournament’s final, such choices would not be as scrutinized. “Messi didn’t show up in the final against Spain either, and nobody talks much about that,” Costa added.
