Gunmen kill 85-year-old community secretary in Edo

Elderly Community Leader Killed in Edo State Shooting
BENIN CITY, Edo State — An 85-year-old community leader, Reuben Owie, was fatally shot in his home on Sunday evening, August 2, 2026, in Iguosa, a locality near Okhunhun.
According to the Edo State Police Command, Owie, who served as the secretary of the Iyowa community, was attacked around 8:15 p.m. by two unidentified gunmen. The incident was reported by his son, Osayomwanbo Owie.
“The police received a report from Osayomwanbo Owie, indicating that his father had been assaulted at their residence on Abu Street,” said the Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem. “The report stated that one of the assailants shot Hon. Reuben Owie in the head, leading to his death.”
Following the incident, police officers responded to the scene to document the event and recover the body. The deceased has been transferred to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital for examination.
Ikoedem stated that authorities are actively investigating the shooting and working to identify the suspects involved.
