At least 17 people were killed and 15 others injured in a shooting at a tavern in Wedela township, located southwest of Johannesburg, according to police reports.
Emergency medical services pronounced all 17 victims dead at the scene early Sunday morning. The motive for the shooting remains unclear, the South African Police Service stated.
Authorities are currently searching for eight suspects believed to be armed with AK-47 rifles and pistols.
