Fatal Crash on Hadejia Road Claims Seven Lives, Injures 70

KANO, Nigeria — A tragic road traffic accident on Sunday morning along Hadejia Road at Kwanar Danja resulted in the deaths of seven individuals and injuries to 70 others. The incident occurred around 8:33 a.m. and involved a commercial DAF trailer, registered as KTG 467 YG.

According to a press statement from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kano State Sector Command, the agency received a distress call at 8:35 a.m. and dispatched a rescue team that arrived on the scene just five minutes later at 8:40 a.m.

The statement, issued by the Corps’ Public Relations Officer Abdullahi Labaran, reported that a total of 105 people were involved in the crash. Among the injured are 55 males and 15 females, all of whom suffered varying degrees of injuries.

Preliminary investigations identified over-speeding and loss of control as the likely causes of the crash. The FRSC noted that the situation was exacerbated by the hazardous practice of transporting passengers alongside goods in the vehicle.

“The crash was classified as a single-vehicle fatal incident,” the FRSC stated, adding that the road conditions were favorable at the time of the accident and no items were retrieved from the scene.

In the aftermath, the injured victims were distributed across four hospitals in the Kano metropolitan area. Sir Sunusi Specialist Hospital received 24 victims, Gezawa General Hospital treated another 24, 20 were taken to Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital, and seven individuals were transported to Abdullahi Wase Specialist Hospital in Nasarawa.

The FRSC extended its condolences to the families of the deceased and expressed hope for the swift recovery of those injured. The agency also issued a stern warning to motorists, particularly commercial drivers, against over-speeding, reckless driving, and the unlawful transport of passengers in goods vehicles. These dangerous practices, the FRSC emphasized, have led to unnecessary loss of life.

Furthermore, the FRSC urged the public to prioritize safety and adhere to traffic regulations to help safeguard lives and property.
