NDLEA warns of cannabis-infused cookies, gummies in circulation
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has issued a warning regarding cookies and gummies found in circulation that may contain illegal substances. The agency urged parents to closely monitor their children’s consumption of imported snacks that could pose health risks.
In a statement released on Sunday, Femi Babafemi, Director of Media and Advocacy for the NDLEA, disclosed that authorities have uncovered attempts by smugglers to bring prohibited substances into the country disguised as common sweets and baked goods.
The statement detailed a significant interception by the Nigeria Customs Service at the Tin Can Island Port in Lagos, where officials seized two 40-foot containers originating from the United States.
Babafemi explained that among the legitimate imports, which included vehicles, generators, and fabrics, authorities discovered thousands of cannabis-infused cookies and gummies valued at approximately N373.8 million.
NDLEA officials highlighted that the seized items were packaged as colorful and attractive vegan snacks, raising public health concerns due to the potential for accidental consumption by children and young adults. The items have been transferred to the NDLEA for further investigation.
