‘It’s Alabi’s turn to produce next Oluwo Afobaje of Ibadanland’ – Court rules
An Oyo State High Court in Ibadan has ruled that the Alabi section of the Labosinde family has the right to produce the next Oluwo Afobaje of Ibadanland.
Justice Babatunde Olawoyin delivered the judgment on Wednesday in response to a suit filed by the Alabi section, which claimed it was denied the opportunity to assume the prestigious title by the other family sections.
The position of Oluwo Afobaje is designated for the Labosinde family, a significant role that entails performing essential traditional rites during the installation of any Olubadan of Ibadanland.
According to court documents, the Alabi section has not held the title since 1971, having been excluded by the Mosadogun and Onifade-Babalola sections of the family.
In his ruling, Olawoyin stated that the evidence presented by the Alabi section outweighed that of the defendants. He affirmed that Alabi is a legitimate descendant of Labosinde and entitled to the same rights to the Oluwo Afobaje title as the other family sections.
Olawoyin directed that upon the departure of the current Oluwo Afobaje, Chief Wahab Popoola from the Mosadogun section, the Alabi section will be permitted to nominate the successor.
