Hichilema wins second term as president of copper-rich Zambia | African Union

Zambia’s President Hakainde Hichilema has secured re-election with 60 percent of the vote, following a period of uncertainty when vote counting was temporarily suspended due to attacks on election officials.
Hichilema’s win marks a significant endorsement of his leadership. As the second-largest producer of copper in Africa, Zambia plays a crucial role in the global energy transition, a pivotal issue amid intensifying competition over copper resources between China and the United States.
The election results were declared on August 18, 2026.
