CAIR slams Texas governor’s ‘anti-Muslim stunt’ on airport washing stations | Islamophobia News

Dallas-Fort Worth Airport Cancels Plans for Islamic Ablution Stations Following Governor’s Funding Threat

The Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) has abandoned its plans to install wudu facilities, which are used for Islamic pre-prayer ablution, following a warning from Texas Governor Greg Abbott that the state would revoke funding for the airport.

On Monday, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) publicly criticized Abbott for his opposition to the proposed stations, calling it another example of an “anti-Muslim political stunt.”

In a statement shared on social media, CAIR described Abbott’s response as one of the more “ridiculous” controversies he has manufactured regarding Muslim issues, labeling it hypocritical.

DFW officials stated that the decision to scrap the wudu stations came after an expedited review, prompted by heightened public interest. The airport’s evaluation indicated that such facilities would not yield the operational benefits initially anticipated.

Last week, Abbott ordered a review of DFW and George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) in Houston, which already features wudu stations, with the intent of possibly revoking state grant funds. He accused both airports of religious discrimination and referred the matter to federal agencies for investigation.

“These ablution facilities appear designed to single out one subset of the population for special treatment based on religion. That is illegal,” Abbott stated in a press release on Friday. He emphasized that both airports, as government-owned entities, must adhere to constitutional prohibitions against religious discrimination.

While the First Amendment prohibits the government from favoring any religion, civil rights advocates contend that offering religious accommodations at publicly funded facilities is permissible and does not violate the law. CAIR pointed out that the proposed wudu stations would be open for anyone’s use, similar to interfaith prayer rooms and other facilities already available at various airports.

The organization further noted that while Muslims might use the stations most frequently, they would remain accessible to all travelers.

CAIR also highlighted Abbott’s support for legislation requiring Texas schools to display the Ten Commandments and implement Bible stories as required reading, suggesting inconsistency in his approach to religious accommodation.

“Instead of wasting taxpayer resources on this latest anti-Muslim political stunt, Governor Abbott should focus on the state’s real problems under his leadership,” CAIR remarked, referencing issues such as economic inequality and threats to religious freedom.

Abbott previously designated CAIR as a “foreign terrorist organization,” a classification that the group is currently contesting in court.

The controversy over the foot-washing stations occurs amid a broader increase in Islamophobic rhetoric among politicians, including statements from allies of former President Donald Trump. Just last week, Trump made headlines for suggesting that a candidate for the U.S. Senate should not be elected due to his wife’s choice to wear a hijab.

This hostile atmosphere comes in the wake of a series of hate crimes, including a recent shooting at a mosque in San Diego that resulted in the deaths of three individuals.
