Why most graduates are not employable – Actor, Charles Inojie

Nollywood actor Charles Inojie has expressed concerns regarding the employability of many Nigerian graduates, suggesting that a substantial number lack sufficient knowledge and skills in their respective fields of study.

Inojie shared his insights after an encounter with a graduate on a movie set, where he was taken aback by the individual’s limited understanding of their academic discipline. Specifically, the graduate, who majored in Linguistics, struggled to engage in a discussion about the subject, which Inojie noted was only an elective for him.

“I was having a discussion with someone on set; she said she studied Linguistics. She was so surprised and couldn’t believe it when I mentioned Noam Chomsky. She was lost when we started discussing her course,” Inojie recounted.

The experience left Inojie disappointed and reinforced his belief about the overall quality of education for some graduates.

“I’ve heard people say that a good number of our graduates today are not employable. That statement is not too far from the truth. Many young people are reluctant to take up jobs because they lack a basic understanding of their fields, even though they hold the necessary academic qualifications,” Inojie added.
