FCT Police Arrest 10 Suspected Traffic Robbers, 20 Motorists for Violating Traffic Regulations
ABUJA — The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command announced the arrest of 10 individuals suspected of involvement in traffic robberies, alongside 20 motorists accused of driving against traffic, commonly referred to as “one-way.”
FCT Commissioner of Police Ahmed Mohammed Sanusi provided details of the operation during a press briefing on Wednesday, highlighting the enforcement action taken in response to community concerns regarding criminal activities during traffic congestion. These activities sometimes involve criminals posing as hawkers to rob unsuspecting motorists and passengers.
In an effort to enhance public safety, Sanusi instructed Divisional Police Officers, particularly those operating in the central areas of the city, to identify and remove suspicious individuals from key roadways and traffic zones.
“Currently, we have detained ten suspects involved in traffic-related robberies,” Sanusi stated, listing the individuals as Umar Salihu, Yusuf Isah, Aliyu Hamza, Abubakar Naziru, Muhammed Musa, Yagugu Mohammed, Suwidi Jibril, Kasimu Taraba, Abubakar Sani, and Aminu Umar. All suspects remain in police custody and are undergoing investigation.
Additionally, Sanusi reported that the 20 motorists apprehended for various traffic offenses, particularly driving against traffic, have been charged and are awaiting judicial proceedings.
On August 14, three individuals were reportedly kidnapped from their residence in the Nyanya area of the FCT and taken to New Nyanya in Nasarawa State. Police operatives from the Violent Crime Response Unit utilized tips from the public to track the suspects, which led to the arrest of two individuals, Godwin Afekhide and Aaron Ogbu, linked to the kidnapping. All three victims were rescued unharmed and subsequently reunited with their families, according to Sanusi.
The commissioner also detailed arrests related to armed robbery and burglary. Ismail Tasiu, 32, was apprehended at a hotel in Jabi following investigations into robbery incidents in Nyanya and Kubwa. Tasiu was arrested alongside Adamu Aliyu, 35, who is allegedly connected to stolen property transactions. Police reported recovering five motorcycles, three knives, a vehicle license plate, and a cap labeled “Kaduna State Vigilante Service” from the suspects.
“We have also arrested six individuals associated with burglary and armed robbery. Investigations suggest that this group specialized in nighttime home invasions, during which they stole valuables and attacked victims,” Sanusi added.
The FCT Police Command has pledged to continue its operations aimed at combating criminal activity across the territory, assuring residents of ongoing efforts to enhance safety and security.
