Man allegedly impersonates DSS operative, extorts motorists in Abuja
The Department of State Services (DSS) has apprehended a man accused of impersonating its personnel and using a tactical uniform along with a fake firearm to intimidate and extort motorists in Abuja.
The suspect, identified as Moferewa Maiye, hails from Agbajojun Village in the Mopamuro Local Government Area of Kogi State. He was taken into custody late Wednesday near NITEL Junction on Adetokunbo Ademola Way in Wuse II.
A security source revealed that the DSS acted on reliable intelligence regarding Maiye’s alleged impersonation of a DSS operative. He reportedly used the tactical uniform and imitation weapon to threaten commuters and motorists.
“Upon his arrest, he was found with a DSS tactical uniform and a fake pistol,” the source stated.
Maiye was tracked to his hideout before being detained by DSS operatives. According to the source, he utilized the uniform and fake firearm to coerce money from individuals on the road.
During questioning, Maiye allegedly claimed that his late brother, identified as Monday Maiye, was a member of the DSS. He stated that the uniform and equipment in his possession belonged to his deceased sibling.
“The suspect said the DSS kit he had was his late brother’s,” the source added.
The DSS is currently investigating how Maiye acquired the uniform and other items associated with the agency. Authorities aim to determine the circumstances surrounding his possession of the uniform.
“Investigators are working to establish the origin of the DSS uniform and equipment,” the source confirmed.
Officials are also examining whether Maiye has a history of similar offenses.
“Investigators are trying to ascertain how long the suspect has been engaged in impersonation and extortion activities,” the source noted.
The suspect remains in custody as interrogations and investigations continue. The DSS has emphasized that the arrest is part of ongoing efforts to prevent criminals from using the identities of security agencies to commit crimes.
