2026 IYD: CP cautions youths against violence, political thuggery

Akwa Ibom Police Commissioner Urges Youths to Reject Political Violence
UYO, Nigeria — Commissioner of Police Baba Mohammed Azare of the Akwa Ibom State Command has issued a strong warning to young Nigerians against engaging in violence or political thuggery.
During a speech at the International Youth Day 2026 National Youth Leadership and Security Initiative, held at the Command Headquarters in Ikot Akpan Abia, Azare encouraged youths to adopt the motto “My Future Is Greater Than Political Thuggery.” He emphasized that no political ambition merits sacrificing their lives or futures.
Azare urged young people to actively participate in democratic processes while avoiding thuggery, stating that politics should focus on ideas and service rather than conflict. He acknowledged that although young Nigerians come from varied backgrounds, they share common aspirations for education, employment, security, and equal opportunities.
In addition, the commissioner called on youths to protect government infrastructure, describing public facilities as essential assets for all citizens. He urged them to report vandalism and suspicious activities to law enforcement rather than attempting to handle such matters independently.
Addressing the issue of digital responsibility, Azare reiterated the campaign message, “Think Before You Click, Verify Before You Share.” He cautioned youths against misinformation, cyberbullying, and the misuse of artificial intelligence, emphasizing the need for responsible communication on social media.
The commissioner also informed the public that individuals involved in cybercrime and related offenses would face legal consequences, regardless of their status or affiliations. He urged political actors and community leaders to refrain from using youths as tools for electoral violence.
Azare commended Governor Pastor Umo Eno for his dedication to youth development, particularly for incorporating youth presidents and leadership structures into the state’s security framework.
A key highlight of the event was the launch of the “ONE TO TELL TEN” Youth Engagement Programme, designed to amplify positive security messages within communities.
