Seat of caliphate under threat, stop Sokoto killings – MURIC to Defence minister
The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has urged Minister of Defence General Christopher Gwabin Musa (retired) to mobilize available resources and personnel to address the ongoing violence and killings across Nigeria.
In a statement issued on Saturday by Executive Director Professor Isiaq Akintola, the organization expressed deep concern over the recent violence in Sokoto State, particularly the killing of innocent civilians.
Akintola emphasized that the persistent incidents of killings, kidnappings, and other violent crimes must be urgently addressed. He highlighted that many farmers in Sokoto are unable to access their fields and that residents are fleeing their communities in search of safety.
“City dwellers in Sokoto now find it necessary to sleep with one eye open,” Akintola added, illustrating the heightened state of fear among the population.
The statement noted a troubling trend of increasing violence in Nigeria, with Sokoto State emerging as a particular focal point over the past two years. Akintola stated that these ongoing attacks not only compromise national security but also symbolize a broader threat to the historical significance of Sokoto as a center of the Nigerian caliphate.
MURIC holds the Nigerian Army accountable for the perceived security failures in the region. The organization called for robust defense measures to ensure the safety of residents in Sokoto and surrounding areas.
