Man Utd humiliated at Hull to open Premier League account | Football News

Manchester United Suffers Defeat in Premier League Opener
Manchester United began the new Premier League season with a disappointing 2-0 loss to promoted Hull City at the MKM Stadium on Saturday.
The match saw Hull score both of their goals in the first half, courtesy of Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy. Despite facing significant injury challenges that left them without 10 players, Hull delivered a spirited performance against a United side that struggled to find its footing.
This defeat marks a disheartening start for Manchester United, who finished third in the league last season and were expected to compete for the title. The performance sparked concerns about their ability to compete effectively against top teams, such as reigning champions Arsenal.
Making their debuts in midfield, Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos, signed from Aston Villa and Chelsea respectively, failed to leave a mark on the game, drawing further scrutiny from fans and analysts alike.
Following the loss, United Manager Michael Carrick dismissed suggestions that the team was given an easy start to the season, as they will face another promoted side, Ipswich Town, in their next match. Carrick, who has taken over the permanent managerial role after a successful interim stint, now finds himself under increased pressure to deliver results.
Despite the disappointing performance, Carrick has stated his desire for more signings, with a deal reportedly in place for Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba.
Hull City, who were promoted via the playoffs last season, celebrated their first victory over United since 2017 with fervor. Manager Sergej Jakirovic had previously expressed confidence in his team, despite skepticism from pundits regarding their chances of avoiding relegation this season.
The match began with United asserting early control, with Luke Shaw’s cross leading to a fierce strike from Bryan Mbeumo, which was saved by Hull’s debut goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis. United continued to threaten, but Hull quickly demonstrated their potential to challenge.
In the 17th minute, Hull exploited United’s vulnerability on set-pieces. A poorly defended corner allowed Oli McBurnie to set up Ajayi, who scored from close range, ushering in wild celebrations from Hull supporters.
Patrick Dorgu had a chance to equalize for United but squandered the opportunity, and Hull extended their lead shortly before halftime. Regan Slater’s free-kick was mishandled by United’s defense, allowing Mendy to score with a powerful header.
Carrick responded by introducing Marcus Rashford at halftime, but the forward’s presence had little impact. Hull remained the more threatening side, and United’s lack of cohesion became increasingly evident as the match progressed. Tielemans and Santos were substituted midway through the second half, but their exit did not alter the outcome, as United ultimately surrendered without a fight.
As the season unfolds, Manchester United will need to regroup quickly to find their form and make a strong recovery in the coming matches.
