EPL: ‘I’ve been saying for weeks’ – Rio Ferdinand reacts to Man United’s 2-0 defeat to Hull

Former Manchester United Defender Rio Ferdinand Reacts to Loss Against Hull City

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has responded to the Red Devils’ 2-0 defeat to Hull City in their opening Premier League match at MKM Stadium.

Hull City, returning to the Premier League after a nine-year absence, secured the victory with a strong performance. Defender Semi Ajayi scored the first goal in the 17th minute, capitalizing on a rebound after Oli McBurnie’s shot was deflected onto the post by Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens.

The home team doubled their lead in the 38th minute when club-record signing Nobel Mendy headed in a free-kick delivered by Regan Slater.

Following the defeat, Ferdinand took to social media to express his thoughts. He highlighted the difficulties teams face when playing against newly promoted clubs away from home, especially in season openers.

In a post on X, Ferdinand wrote, “Not the 45 minutes we wanted… I have been saying for weeks, and Carra mentioned it yesterday, that facing a newly promoted team away from home is not ideal. The stadium was electric, and they were ready for the fight… Hull denied United any space, were solid defensively, and their crossing was exceptional. We must DEFEND crosses better!!!”

Michael Carrick’s squad approached the match with optimism, having concluded the previous season strongly and finishing in third place after a promising second half of the 2025-26 season.

Despite Manchester United holding 72% possession and taking 21 shots, the team struggled to capitalize, managing only 40 touches in Hull’s penalty area.
