Oby Ezekwesili reveals ‘only achievement’ recorded under Tinubu

Oby Ezekwesili, a former Minister of Education, has acknowledged progress made by President Bola Tinubu’s administration in stabilizing Nigeria’s foreign exchange rate through adherence to market principles.

In an interview with News Central Television, Ezekwesili stated that while these measures are a step forward, the improvements have yet to result in better living conditions for the average Nigerian. She emphasized that the population does not fully feel the impact of the government’s economic reforms.

“Nigeria is not out of the woods,” she said, pointing to the rampant poverty and rising living costs that persist in the country. Ezekwesili noted that the government has achieved some level of macroeconomic stability, particularly in reducing volatility in the foreign exchange rate.

“Inflation is managed on paper, but in reality, the cost of living for the average citizen remains high,” she added.

Ezekwesili criticized the administration’s handling of inflation, asserting that the sharp increase in prices could have been avoided and was the result of various policy decisions.

She urged that macroeconomic indicators should be considered alongside the structural challenges facing Nigeria’s economy. Ezekwesili identified low productivity as a key obstacle to economic growth, job creation, and improved household incomes.

Furthermore, she attributed the nation’s economic difficulties to structural misalignments stemming from policy choices that have not adequately addressed the constraints on productivity and economic opportunity.
