Disrespect had set in — Hanga reveals why relationship with Kwankwaso broke down
Senator Rufai Sani Hanga, who represents Kano Central, has detailed the factors contributing to his estranged relationship with former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, a key figure in the Kwankwasiyya movement.
Hanga stated that the discord began to surface as he initiated various empowerment programs aimed at benefiting constituents and became increasingly engaged in political activities.
In a recent interview with Dan’uwa Rano TV, Hanga recounted a significant empowerment event he organized, which included the distribution of vehicles, rice, fertilizer, grinding machines, and other essential items. He indicated that this event took place at a venue associated with Kwankwaso, following prior confirmation of the former governor’s attendance.
The senator described the venue as filled with cars, bags of rice, fertilizer, livestock, and other materials, noting that preparations took around a day and a half. However, upon his arrival, Kwankwaso appeared displeased. He requested a break for prayers and left the event, ultimately not returning.
Despite Kwankwaso’s absence, the program proceeded with participation from several political leaders, including former Kano Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo and National Assembly members.
Hanga reported that Kwankwaso later approached him, expressing dissatisfaction with the empowerment initiative, suggesting that he had organized it merely to garner praise. Hanga quoted Kwankwaso as saying, “You came distributing things because people are praising you, saying Kano Central has never had a senator like you… That is why I refused to come back after prayers.”
Following this confrontation, Hanga apologized and sought to mend their relationship. However, he alleged that Kwankwaso had previously requested that specific individuals be included in his empowerment efforts. He also claimed that Kwankwaso sent Sunusi Surajo Kwankwaso to ask for a vehicle for a person outside his senatorial district, which Hanga later provided after being informed of the individual’s car accident during a political event.
Hanga expressed that this incident altered his perception of their mutual respect, stating, “I realized disrespect had set in.” He suggested that this growing tension coincided with Kwankwaso’s discomfort regarding the magnitude of Hanga’s empowerment efforts and his rising popularity.
Additionally, Hanga indicated that his unsuccessful bid for re-election was intertwined with the deterioration of his relationship with Kwankwaso, whom he referred to as the “Jagora” of the movement.
