Alleged drug trafficking: Nigerians deserve answers on Tinubu’s past – Peter Obi
Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has raised concerns regarding President Bola Tinubu’s reported efforts to prevent a foreign court from accessing records related to his past. Obi emphasized that Nigerians have a right to transparency in matters of public interest.
In a statement released on his official social media account on August 31, 2026, Obi expressed alarm over the legal actions linked to the President’s educational background. He argued that a sitting president should confront inquiries about their history openly rather than seek to shield such information from legitimate scrutiny.
“It is profoundly embarrassing that we have reached a point where a sitting president is asking a foreign court to withhold records concerning his past, particularly those related to legitimate public interest,” Obi stated.
He questioned why fundamental aspects of Tinubu’s education, including primary and secondary schooling, remain contentious and are primarily addressed through legal means. Obi contended that Nigerians merit “clear, credible, and verifiable explanations” regarding these issues, particularly when educational records have previously been submitted.
Obi also expressed concern about the implications of such controversies for the nation’s youth, asserting that the presidency should embody integrity, accountability, and transparency. “The nation’s highest office should exemplify ethical leadership,” he said, adding that “Nigeria is greater than any one person, and the integrity of the Republic must always come before the interests of the individual.”
