Insecurity: NYSC reacts as abducted corps members regains freedom after days in captivity
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has issued a statement following the rescue of 16 corps members who were abducted in Kogi State on August 26, 2026.
The corps members were taken while traveling from the NYSC camp in Bayelsa State to Abuja after completing their Orientation Course.
In the statement, signed by Caroline Embu, Director of Information and Public Relations, the NYSC expressed gratitude to the Nigerian Armed Forces, the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), Kogi State Vigilante groups, and other agencies that participated in the search and rescue operations.
The NYSC commended the professionalism and dedication displayed by all involved in the rescue, saying these qualities were instrumental in successfully locating the abducted corps members.
Additionally, the NYSC acknowledged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s continued support for the safety of corps members across the country. “The security agencies were indeed animated by His Excellency’s concern and commitment to urgently and successfully rescuing the corps members,” the statement read.
The corps also thanked the families of the abducted members for their patience during the crisis and praised the media for their responsible coverage of the situation, which did not jeopardize the safety of the individuals involved.
“We are relieved that all affected corps members have been safely recovered and are in high spirits, eager to return to their places of primary assignment. Their resilience is commendable, and we remain committed to supporting them as they recover from this traumatic experience,” the statement continued.
The NYSC reaffirmed its commitment to the safety and welfare of all corps members and indicated plans to collaborate with government and security agencies to enhance protective measures.
“Lessons have been learned, and protocols will be reviewed to prevent future incidents. We salute the courage, duty, and patriotism of those involved,” it concluded.
