Four dead, several rescued as three-storey building crumbles in Ilorin
A three-story building in Ilorin, Kwara State, collapsed early Tuesday morning, resulting in the deaths of four individuals. Emergency responders have successfully rescued four others from the debris as search-and-rescue operations continue.
The building, located at 41 Popo Giwa Street next to Gogoro Mosque in the Ile Oyan Masalasi Gogoro area, fell around dawn, according to authorities.
Hassan Adekunle, Public Relations Officer for the Kwara State Fire Service, confirmed the incident and reported that rescue teams recovered four bodies and rescued four survivors from the rubble. “We have recovered four people dead and rescued four people alive,” Adekunle stated.
He further noted that rescue operations are ongoing, and more information will be released as the situation develops. Initial reports had suggested that at least six individuals, including two children, had been rescued alive prior to the latest update from emergency officials.
Eyewitnesses reported that fire service personnel, along with community members, worked tirelessly to reach those trapped under the collapsed structure. An excavator was deployed to help clear debris and access areas where additional victims might be located.
Authorities are still investigating the exact number of occupants in the building at the time of the collapse, and the cause of the incident has not yet been determined.
