Kano to establish more military bases in bandit-prone LGAs

KANO, Nigeria — In response to recent security challenges posed by armed bandits in several local government areas, Kano State Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf announced that the Federal Government has agreed to establish additional military bases in strategic locations within the state.

During a meeting held on September 5, 2026, Governor Yusuf convened with the 44 local government council chairmen, the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, and other key officials, including the state’s Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs. The discussions focused on enhancing the state’s security measures and infrastructure.

Kano State Commissioner for Local Government, Alhaji Muhammad Taju Usman, stated that the meeting concluded with a consensus on the urgent need for new military installations. He emphasized the importance of strengthening the security architecture in the state, which currently includes the Nigeria Police Force and local security initiatives such as the Neighbourhood Watch and forest guards.

Usman noted that the Governor and the Minister of Defence had conferred and agreed that new military bases would be set up in areas identified as vulnerable to security threats. The initiative aims to improve rapid response capabilities and ensure the safety of lives and property in affected communities.

In addition to security improvements, the meeting also resulted in the awarding of contracts for the construction of Computer-Based Test (CBT) and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) centers in all 44 local government areas. These projects, valued at N27.8 billion, are intended to provide students with reliable internet access while preparing for examinations such as the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) tests.

Other resolutions included the provision of one emergency ambulance per ward to enhance access to healthcare services, with two drivers to be hired for each ambulance, prioritizing those from the respective wards. Plans are also underway to establish electric vehicle charging stations at key locations in Kano State capital as part of a pilot initiative.

To improve grassroots engagement, Governor Yusuf announced the appointment of 50 special reporters for each local government area and 35 advisers to support the chairmen. Of these adviser positions, 15 will be allocated to individuals from the former All Progressives Congress (APC) structure.

Usman called on all relevant ministries, departments, agencies, and local government councils to ensure the prompt and effective implementation of these resolutions.
