Kwara Police Commissioner Identifies Operational Gaps in Crime Fighting
Ojo Adekimi, the Commissioner of Police in Kwara State, has highlighted several operational challenges that the police command faces in its efforts to combat crime throughout the state.
During an operational inspection tour on Thursday by Assistant Inspector-General of Police Betty Isokpan Otimenyin at the Zone 8 Headquarters in Lokoja, Adekimi detailed issues such as a shortage of manpower, insufficient operational vehicles, lack of communication equipment, limited surveillance capabilities, and inadequate protective gear.
He emphasized that the state’s geographical diversity and the necessity for a strong police presence across area commands, divisions, highways, and border communities place significant strain on the available personnel.
Despite these challenges, Adekimi reassured the public that the command is committed to effectively utilizing its current resources to achieve optimal results. He reported that the command has made significant strides in combating kidnapping, armed robbery, cultism, and other violent crimes.
These successes have reportedly stemmed from intelligence-led operations, coordinated tactical deployments, and ongoing patrols in vulnerable communities and target areas. Adekimi noted that these efforts have led to the arrest of multiple suspects associated with various criminal activities, along with the recovery of arms, ammunition, and other evidence.
“Despite prevailing security challenges, the command has continued to achieve notable successes in crime prevention and detection,” Adekimi stated. “Significant progress has been made in addressing kidnapping, armed robbery, cult-related activities, and other forms of violent crime.”
The Commissioner affirmed that the operational strategy of the command aligns with the vision of Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu, focusing on professionalism, intelligence-driven policing, and operational effectiveness. He credited the command’s achievements to enhanced intelligence gathering, strategic deployments, effective oversight, and the dedication of officers who work under challenging conditions.
Adekimi also acknowledged Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for his support and logistical interventions, which have strengthened the command’s operational capacity.
He stressed the importance of discipline in achieving operational success, stating that misconduct, extortion, discourteous behavior, unwarranted checks of citizens’ personal devices, and abuse of authority will not be condoned.
The Commissioner remarked that the AIG’s inspection tour is timely and will further enhance the command’s professionalism and preparedness.
“We assure the Zone and the Force Headquarters of our ongoing commitment to improving our achievements and fulfilling our constitutional duty of protecting lives and property,” Adekimi concluded.
