Anambra Police Chief Urges Adherence to Proper Arrest Procedures
UKPO, Anambra State — Assistant Inspector General of Police Miller Gajere Dantawaye, head of Zone 13, has issued a stern warning to the officers of the Nigeria Police Force in Anambra State against the practice of indiscriminate arrests and detentions aimed at satisfying complainants.
During an official visit to the Anambra State Police Command following his new assignment, Dantawaye emphasized that the era of impunity and unwarranted interference in public matters has concluded.
Speaking to a gathering of police officers, Dantawaye stated that he will not overlook reports of arbitrary arrests and detentions. He also warned District Police Officers (DPOs) about the need to maintain clean environments at their stations.
“There will be no more compromise in the force across the Zone 13 jurisdiction under my watch as directed by the Inspector General of Police,” Dantawaye said. “We must treat the public with civility. Respect breeds respect, and our duty is to protect citizens with professionalism.”
He underscored the importance of showing respect to community members at all times, emphasizing the need for officers to uphold the integrity of the police force. “Our appearance affects how we are perceived. We must improve our level of neatness, as it reflects our commitment to our role,” he added.
Dantawaye indicated that he would conduct unannounced visits to stations, stating that his leadership would not tolerate indiscipline or misconduct from officers. He called for collaboration with residents of Anambra, Enugu, and Ebonyi states to keep the region free from violent crime.
In his remarks, he encouraged officers to propose Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) methods to complainants instead of resorting to arrest and detention. “Not every situation requires arrests. Officers must avoid acting as tools for those looking to oppress others,” he said.
Dantawaye also announced plans for training programs focused on various aspects of crime prevention, including arms handling, intelligence gathering, investigation procedures, and administration, affirming his commitment to enhancing the skills of the police force under his command.
