Zamfara: Police launch rescue operation for six abducted Islamic clerics
The Zamfara Police Command has initiated a coordinated rescue operation aimed at securing the release of six Islamic clerics abducted by armed assailants along the Dakko–Damri feeder road in Bakura Local Government Area.
The abduction occurred on September 12, 2026, around 11:30 a.m., as the clerics were traveling to Talata Mafara. According to the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Yazid Abubakar, the victims were intercepted when the attackers ambushed their vehicle, armed with sophisticated weapons.
Following the incident, the Divisional Police Officer for Bakura Division acted swiftly, mobilizing police personnel along with the Vigilante and Crime Response Unit (VCRU). These teams, in collaboration with other security agencies, have launched an extensive search operation in the area, combing through surrounding vegetation as they seek to locate and rescue the abducted clerics while also apprehending the perpetrators.
Commissioner of Police Ahmed Bello has instructed involved operatives to maximize resources and intensify their efforts to ensure the victims’ safe return. The Command is also appealing to the public for credible and timely information that may assist in the rescue operation and in bringing those responsible for the abduction to justice.
