Ex-presidential aide Ahmad questions inclusion of Kwankwaso in proposed US sanctions

Former Aide Reacts to Proposed Sanctions Against Senator Kwankwaso
Former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad has expressed surprise over reports that certain United States lawmakers are advocating for sanctions against Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
In a post on social media platform X on Wednesday, Ahmad questioned the rationale behind Kwankwaso’s inclusion in the proposed sanctions. “I am not holding a brief for Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso, but I genuinely wonder how his name appeared there,” he stated.
Ahmad emphasized that, based on his personal experience, Kwankwaso has a long-standing record of opposing terrorism. “Throughout my acquaintance with him and during his tenures as Governor, Minister of Defence, Senator, and now as a political leader, he has consistently taken a firm stance against terrorism in all its forms,” he added.
The proposed sanctions were introduced as part of a bill titled the Nigeria Religious Freedom and Accountability Act of 2026 by U.S. lawmakers, including Riley Moore and Chris Smith. The legislation reportedly seeks targeted measures, including visa bans and asset freezes, affecting Kwankwaso and certain Fulani herder groups.
