Security forces neutralise terrorists, recover weapons in Kebbi
Security forces have neutralized multiple suspected terrorists and recovered various weapons and items during a joint operation in the Gumki Forest area of Kebbi State. The operation took place around 6:05 a.m. on Monday, September 14, 2026, involving the Kebbi State Police Command and troops from the Nigerian Army as part of Operation Fansan Yamma.
Kebbi State Police Public Relations Officer SP Bashir Usman and the spokesperson for the Army’s 8 Division, Lt. Col. Olaniyi Osoba, reported that security forces confronted terrorist elements while navigating identified enclaves within the forest. Osoba stated that the troops engaged the militants, resulting in the deaths of several individuals, while others managed to escape into the foliage.
Following the confrontation, an additional search of the area yielded significant recoveries, including one PKT machine gun with 174 rounds of ammunition, one AK-47 rifle with 14 rounds of ammunition, four motorcycles, and two mobile phones. Other items retrieved included N87,000 in cash, military camouflage uniforms, a pair of boots, charms, and various combat-related materials.
Usman noted that Gumki Forest, situated near the Nigeria-Niger border, is recognized as a transport route for bandits and other criminal groups operating in the region. Despite the recent activity, the police reported that the area remains relatively calm as joint operations continue to clear the forest of criminal elements.
Kebbi State Commissioner of Police, CP Umar M. Hadejia, praised the security personnel for their bravery and commitment to their duties. He emphasized the police command’s intent to maintain coordinated and intelligence-driven operations in collaboration with other security agencies to combat banditry and terrorism throughout the state. Hadejia also encouraged residents to share timely and credible information to support ongoing efforts.
