Elderly Man Injured in Hit-and-Run; Empty Gas Truck Crashes into Median in Lagos
IKORODU, Lagos State — An elderly man, identified as Muhammad Bello, incurred serious injuries in a hit-and-run accident on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, in Ikorodu. In a separate incident later that day, an empty gas truck collided with a road median on Ikorodu Road near Palmgrove.
According to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), emergency response teams were dispatched shortly after both incidents were reported.
At approximately 2:10 p.m., paramedics from LASEMA’s Lion Rescue Team arrived at the Agbowa Community following a distress call regarding the hit-and-run. Upon arrival, they found Bello lying near the roadside after being struck by a vehicle that fled the scene.
Initial assessments by LASEMA personnel indicated that Bello sustained significant injuries, including suspected fractures in both legs. The agency activated its medical response protocol and coordinated with the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) to transport him for medical care.
In collaboration with the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps and the Nigeria Police Force, LASEMA responders remained at the scene to manage safety while treatment efforts were underway.
In a separate incident reported around 4:20 p.m., LASEMA’s Cobra Team was dispatched to Palmgrove after reports of a truck collision. Upon their arrival at 4:26 p.m., responders discovered that an empty gas truck had collided with the road median.
Preliminary investigations suggested that a mechanical failure related to the truck’s braking system may have caused the driver to lose control.
LASEMA stated that there were no fatalities reported in this incident. Following the crash, the Cobra Team coordinated with the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and the Nigeria Police Force to implement traffic control measures to safeguard other road users.
Additionally, LASEMA deployed heavy-duty equipment to assist with the removal of the truck and to facilitate the restoration of normal traffic flow.
Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, praised the timely response and professionalism exhibited by both the Lion and Cobra Teams, along with collaborating agencies. He reiterated the Lagos State Government’s dedication to enhancing emergency response infrastructure and ensuring a safe environment for all citizens.
Oke-Osanyintolu expressed sympathy for the victim of the hit-and-run and reminded motorists to adhere to traffic regulations and conduct regular vehicle maintenance. He encouraged greater responsibility on the road and urged the public to report emergencies promptly via LASEMA’s toll-free lines for immediate assistance.
