2023: Tinubu forgave northern govs who opposed him — Shettima
Vice President Kashim Shettima stated that President Bola Tinubu has forgiven those northern governors who opposed his presidential bid during the 2023 election, calling the act a demonstration of effective leadership.
Shettima made these remarks Wednesday in Ilorin, Kwara State, during the ceremony to honor Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, who was conferred the title of Sardauna of Ilorin Emirate by Emir Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari.
Addressing an audience amid growing political activity ahead of the 2027 elections, Shettima encouraged politicians to engage in campaigns devoid of animosity and to seek reconciliation following electoral contests. He emphasized that political differences should not lead to lasting divisions among individuals or groups.
“I call on all of us to unite in this political season and play politics without bitterness,” Shettima urged. “The truth that sets us free is also the truth that people don’t want to hear.”
Reflecting on the 2023 presidential election, Shettima noted that Tinubu faced significant opposition from several northern governors but remained resolute in his ambition. He pointed out that of the 19 northern states, only six supported Tinubu, yet he persevered in his pursuit of the presidency.
Shettima recalled the prevailing sentiment that former President Muhammadu Buhari did not back Tinubu’s aspirations, citing the slogan “Baba bayan sunshi,” which implied Buhari’s lack of support.
Despite this opposition, Shettima highlighted that Tinubu remained focused and ultimately secured victory in the 2023 election. Following his election, Shettima indicated that Tinubu reached out to those who had previously opposed him.
“After the 2023 election, President Tinubu hugged and forgave all other northern governors that did not support him. That is a mark of a good leader,” Shettima said.
The Vice President urged politicians in Kwara State to learn from this example, advocating for the resolution of political differences in order to collaborate for the betterment of the state.
